Satin Planet EP

Eerie, echoing, evanescent. Mark Fisher would approve. Music, words and artwork fit together perfectly: the memories and half-remembered dreams in the lyrics find their musical equivalent in the echoes that pervade "Satin Planet". Likewise, the artwork shows the outline of a person looking backwards (!), but the details are strange and confusing. Everything suspended between dreaming and waking, then and now, knowing and not knowing.

about

“Satin Planet”, the newest EP from Bristol-based artist and DJ, Dutchie, is out September 14th, via Saffron Records. Bookended by “Entrance” and “Exit”, two ambient, sometimes eerie, scene-setting soundscapes, Dutchie’s five-track EP, Satin Planet, blurs the lines between sound design and songwriting, splicing field recordings with soft, stripped-back vocals and live instrumentation.

Much like a dream, “In Deep” (Track 2) - co-produced by Kreed - sounds both familiar and completely new; Dutchie’s soulful vocals are underpinned by tight drums, crooning strings and a trip pop-inspired chord progression. Co-written and sung by Mac Lloyd, “Slower” (Track 3), feels bittersweet; Dutchie’s melancholic lyrics sunbathe amongst neo-soul inspired live trumpets, courtesy of her dad. In the percussive and synth-heavy “Five Day” (Track 4), half-remembered dreams are recollected through layered, spectral vocals - “I’ve been here before.” Originally composed in 5.1 surround, Dutchie’s abilities as both a producer and as a sound engineer are skillfully displayed in this track, which feels just as enveloping and other-worldly in stereo.

Though Satin Planet is Dutchie’s first release with Saffron - the intersectional initiative tackling gender inequality in music tech - she’s been working with the organisation for years and leads the teaching for their highly-celebrated Sound Engineering course in Bristol. With releases on Hold Tight Records, Peachy Sounds and most recently, Jamz Supernova’s label, Future Bounce, Dutchie has come a long way since she first started releasing music in 2017. Self-described as an artist “who can’t seem to stick to one genre” in a recent interview with Attack Magazine, Dutchie’s eclecticism and explorative approach to music production is felt throughout each of the five new tracks: “Satin Planet'' is an engaging, and refreshingly original, next release.
